The QuaranT Diaries #28: You had me at Merlot

Today is a highly important national holiday in the United States. Like most holidays, it occurs only once a year-but technically it could be celebrated every single day on the calendar. It is a day full of fruit, bubbles, and happiness.

If you haven’t guessed it yet. Today is National Drink Wine Day (cue champagne popping and glasses clinking).

And being the wine lover that I am, I thought why not spend this week focusing on this glorious day.

From whites to reds and the rosé in between. Wine Not celebrate today and have a glass...or four lol. Why have less scato when you can have mo’scato? Make all the pour decisions today, after all, it's not good to keep things bottled up.

Ok, ok for now I will put a cork in it...with the puns hehe.

For those who love wine like myself, I hope that you are able to take a moment and have a glass today. To sit back, relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures in life - such as that fermented grape beverage in hand.

Growing up I was always intrigued with wine and its history. My parents used to go to smooth jazz concerts up at Thornton winery in Temecula and sometimes my sisters and I would tag along. I loved getting to see the giant barrels and the acres and acres of grapevines. And to this day I still do. Granted now I get to drink the wine that those created, but still lol. As a kid, smacking down on my nestle ice cream cookie, I thought there were only two kinds - red and white - nothing else; oooo my sweet sweet pure, innocent, and oh so very wrong mind. I wouldn't exactly call myself a wine connoisseur nowadays (but for real props to those who are, especially those who are sommeliers as that is a title only bestowed upon highly skilled individuals) but I have definitely learned over the last few years to appreciate all the different kinds of wines and their flavors a lot more.

Being raised in my family I definitely believe played a huge factor as well - we Zalfens love our wine, what can we say.

From those winery, trips to see family friends play in their bands to my uncle's hand-making of his own wine as well. All around I was surrounded by it and in the best way possible. There is something very special about getting to see a wine made from scratch and watching it curate over the years. Counting down the days till you yourself actually gets to taste and appreciate what you made. I still remember the days we would all spend by the pool trying to come up with a fun and catchy name for the newfound concoctions. Now even though my uncle stopped making his own wine (as it is a long process), I am still actually enjoying it to this day lol. With new shipments of different wines coming in, my uncles cellar space grew limited so guess who was blessed with some of the older handmade bottles ...that's right lol this girl :P

And here my naive little heart was just thinking I would be receiving a few bottles...I was partially right; just instead of bottles, it was boxes haha. Over the course of the last two years I have been making my way through them (as well as drinking other wines) and I can proudly say I only have one box left. Progress lol.

For the longest time, I was always a red wine type of girl. Cabernets hold my heart like no other. I used to shy away from white wine as I just didn't seem to care for the taste that much, and every so often it would give me headaches (many times mimosas have done me dirty lol). This last year something has changed though, and I blame Ashlee (my roommate and one of my best friends for those who don't know) for this one lol and I now find myself actually enjoying white wine and sometimes wanting to drink it more than red. LE GASP. Shocker I know. Shocked me too. Cabs will always be my number one, but there is just something about a nice chilled glass of Pinos Gris that gets to me. And ya know with Wilson Creeks White Cabernet Sauvignon I can have (cue Hannah Montana) the best of both worlds :P

Which we actually have a bottle in the fridge of right now, so if you’ll excuse me…..

We also just got our first decanter for our new place and I'm so excited to try it out eeeeep.

Cheers friends (literally lol)

Till next week.

Stay happy. Stay healthy. Stay happy.
